    yunnan photo blog II

    Friday, August 28th, 2009

When we last left off, our intrepid adventurers found themselves in Lijiang, Yunnan, where to their dismay, a 800 year old Unesco world heritage site was replaced by a monstrosity of modern-day tourism. Only in China would you have a squatty-potty equipped with LCD screens to entertain you as you go about your business.

Determined to boldly go where no KFC had gone before, our travelers headed for Tiger Leaping Gorge. A terrain so perilous said to be infested with (leaping) tigers. Twice as deep as the grand canyon, with icy waters originating from the Tibetan plateau, ranked the #4th on the world’s best white water rivers.

    Booyah!

Our heroes arrive at a Tibetan guesthouse. The walls are lined with intricate carvings of ill-fated travelers:

LEAPING FOR THE BEST BED!!!! (and the mysterious Richard makes his appearance!)

    photoblog – yunnan part I

    It’s Yunnan (photoblog) redux time!!!!

Perhaps one of the nicest things about being a photographer is that once a trip is over, it’s really only just begun. Then comes the massive download (nearly 20GB worth in my case) of images, the processing and tweeking, and generally reliving the experience over and over again.

So part one of my trip. We begin with the train.

Now for a few hundred kuai more, I could have spared myself a 45 hour train ride from Beijing (in the north) aaaaaall the way to Kunming, Yunnan (in the south). But there’s really something rather magical about trains and watching the scenery go by your window. Concrete jungles soon melted into picturesque countryside from the comfort of my berth

I should probably not mention that our trip began with us actually MISSING our original train. By a measly 5 minutes. Seriously. We were schedules for the fast train which would have been around 36 hours, so we lost about an additional half a day in transit. But maybe that was a good thing. Because we wound up getting a soft sleeper… which was really, really cushy.

    back in Beijing

    Thursday, August 27th, 2009

Wow. My time back in Jetsonville went by in a massive blur. I forget just how ridiculously fast is the pace of life in Hong Kong. Or maybe that I’ve had six months worth of catching up to do with friends and family and a very short time to do it in.

I had some really amazing opportunities to shoot over the summer, which has led me to challenge myself and grow not just behind the camera, but also in terms of taking things to the next level. I’m really excited for some of my upcoming projects.

Right now, I’m back in Beijing. And as of two hours ago, no longer homeless. Hooray! I found a sweet little apartment in a great area, and it’s a load off my mind. I’ll even have a fold out bed for visitors :D

Finally getting around to taking care of some of my own pictures from Yunnan and making my way through images from Malaysia and Singapore as well. For now this is just a quick note to say hello, and that I’m alive and well :)

    The Fu Family Slideshow

    Tuesday, August 11th, 2009

I had the pleasure of photographing the Fu family in Hong Kong recently, and it was a blast. The girls decided to do something different for their mom’s birthday by giving her this photo session. There are few ways to celebrate the life of a mother, than to create amazing images together. But hey, that’s me.. :)

I’ve put together a slideshow of their images below. Enjoy!

    techno-babble

One of the things about being back in Hong Kong is an overwhelming urge to modernize. I’ve been bouncing around some fairly remote areas for the last month, and being back here is quite a shock to my system.

After a lot of nagging from my family and even a few friends, I’ve finally bitten the bullet and ordered an iPhone. It arrives in a little over a week, and I think my mother in particular will be pleased as I’m sure she thinks if I have a fancier electronic leash, it might be easier to reach me. Maybe.

The iPhone (though it has yet to actually arrive) has sparked a new wave of modernization. I’ve joined Twitter, created a Facebook Fanpage and have plans to re-haul the blog in a fairly drastic way. With any luck, we’ll be looking at an entirely new page in about two weeks.

To ease the conscience over getting an iPhone, I’m thinking about doing a 365 project. I’m a bit too shy to take a self portrait every day, but I wouldn’t mind doing a 365 object project.. with an occasional “only in China..” perhaps. I’m going to try to keep in touch as much as I can both with twitter and images that will be unique to the FB fan page.

Got suggestions for me? Ways I can improve the blog? An object I should shoot for the 365? Want me to process images faster..? leave a comment! :)
