Sneak peek: ROCKSTAR session with Chuan Foo

    Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

    A boy and his guitar.

I was introduced to Chuan Foo whom I had the privilege of photographing in Malaysia. This opportunity was pure kismet, as we shot just two hours before my departure to Penang. The photoshoot took place on the beautiful grounds of a golf resort, where we happened across a lovely little pond. Can you believe that this is just outside bustling Kuala Lumpur?

There is something wonderful about meeting other creatives. We may express our passions through entirely different mediums, but when you click – you just click. Chuan braved the heat and humidity of Malaysia and did a rockin’ job on this shoot which will be used for his upcoming EP. Not only did he rival the weather in sizzling my new lens, he is a wonderful musician and the first of my models to serenade me while behind the camera (haha.. just kidding!) That said, I really hope to have captured some of his artistic style, blending it with my own. At the very least, I had an amazing soundtrack in the background!

Chuan, thanks for shooting with me. I wish you all the best on your upcoming EP! Check out his cover of MJ’s Man in the Mirror on youtube.

    Beijing Hutong Photography

    Monday, May 25th, 2009

This weekend I went looking for and found Old Beijing. It was the maiden outing of the Tsinghua/BLCU photo club, and it was really nice to geek out once again with fellow photographers.

I’ve been dying to visit Beijing’s Hutongs and I’m glad I finally got a chance to see another aspect of this city. Hutongs are narrow alleyways formed between “Shiheyuan,” the traditional courtyard houses. The hutongs themselves are typically tiny houses, usually consisting of one or two rooms at the most, without running water (residents share public bathrooms, usually one every few “blocks” or so).

Perhaps the most captivating part of Beijing’s hutongs, are how it instantly transports you back in time. Some of the people I met had lived there well over 80 years, housing five generations.

I shot this portrait after striking a conversation up with this woman and promised to send her a copy of the shot. I’m not sure if the postman actually delivers there, but I have her address.. and I might swing by again :)

    Classic Hollywood Portraits

    Thursday, May 21st, 2009

A friend of mine posted this great find and I had to share it. Register and you can download the entire PDF copy.

This is a book on the techniques involved in taking those amazing hollywood B&W shots. The great masters who understood and played with light like it was putty in their hands.

I am dying to try some of these out!

Beijing – a two month redux

    Thursday, April 16th, 2009

I hate beginning blog entries with the too-often used “wow, it’s been a while” but seriously.. it’s been a while.

I’ve been in Beijing for just under two months now, and I can’t even begin to capture how awesome the experience has been. Admitedly, I had my doubts about picking up (yet again). My mother calls me her dragonfly, touching down on water and never really landing. (Of course that sounds much more profound in Chinese. Ha.)

Spring has finally reached Beijing, and I’ve been up to the usual antics with my friends. Tsinghua is amazingly beautiful, and the grounds are a huge distraction from actually making it to class on time.

    She's baaaack!

I couldn’t resist… and cloned myself. Yes, I have single-handedly thwarted the one child policy. Victory is mine!

    tong zhi men!

Who needs stupid tourist shots, when you can do it a la revolution?

    the big hurrah

With my fellow comrades. Jumping for joy. In Tiananmen Square.

Last but not least, I discovered last night that my website is actually UNBLOCKED!!! Hooray!! Maybe this will incite much more blogging, posting and general web activity not related to Facebook. Maybe.

I’m going to Inner Mongolia in two weeks!!!! Can’t wait!

    The Cameron Family Slideshow

    Sunday, February 1st, 2009

I can’t say how excited I am to be able to finally present this from start to finish: The Cameron Family slideshow!!

A few weeks earlier, I had a fantastic shoot with the amazing Cameron Clan, and I’ve been working over-time to pull this together as quickly as possible. That meant a lot of caffeine, lots of cramming new programs both into my hard drive and brain, and the assistance of a very understanding brother who was visiting HK.

    Now without further ado:

    hooray!!
